for michigander s fifth release, brian kage delivers four solid dance-floor fillers, each infused with a unique blend of melodic detroit soul, intelligent acid and perfectly mixed percussion. each offering teleports the listener into a future where social distancing has finally abated and celebration can commence. lockdown starts the record off with undulating 303 bass notes that groove around in a circular arpeggiated formation until hypnotic 909 percussion breaks through with echoing claps and weaves together a tale of futuristic tension building. hold on pain ends features a stabbing analog synth-line that repeats a half-beat phrasing contrasted with slamming technical percussion, a heavy kick and a lush pad that is perfect for late nights in a warehouse. that woman from michigan contains gentle swinging upbeat percussion and deep soothing chords with samples of governor whitmer asking all michiganders to do their part and join together in solidarity. a subtly modulating acid line builds tension into a perfectly resonating crescendo. f.u covid19 - an ominous swelling pad rips across the dystopian horizon as swinging rimshots build around a deep pulsing kick and a dirty mono synth swirl. echoing vocal samples punctuate this acidic frenzy until the tension falls away giving dancers an opportunity to catch their breath before the next round of infectious rhythmic groove forces the hypnotic spell to intensify.

leaving meaning ist das fünfzehnte studioalbum von swans und das erste nach der bekanntgabe der auflösung der band in ihrer letzten formation. es folgt dem 2016er werk the glowing man und wurde von michael gira geschrieben und produziert, aber schafft dennoch den brückenschlag zu aktuellen und ehemaligen swans-musiker*innen, mitgliedern von angels of light sowie anna und maria von hausswolff, ben frost, the necks, baby dee, jennifer gira und anderen. das teilnehmende, musikalische kollektiv wurde sehr genau von gira ausgewählt, wollte er doch seine vision des neuen albums aus eben den individuellen kreativstärken der musikern schöpfen. gerade diese impulse formen leaving meaning zu einem der spannendsten alben in der diskografie von swans.

die vierköpfige formation stammt ursprünglich aus brüssel hat sich mittlerweile aber in marseille, frankreich niedergelassen, wo sie auch iher cyber-gothic stücke produzieren.

mit ihrer formation chic und hits wie „dance, dance, dance“, „good times“ und „le freak“ mischten nile rodgers und bernard edwards in den späten siebzigern gehörig die internationalen discofloors auf. wie keine andere band verstanden es chic, die essenzen von rock, funk und disco zu einem schweißtreibenden, endlos goovenden und gleichsam cool eleganten mix zu verbinden. das ergebnis war ein unvergleichlicher, stets wiedererkennbarer sound, der bis heute unzählige bands nachhaltig beeinflusste.
erstmalig im vinyl-format erhältlich, bietet der nun vorliegende, exzellente konzertmitschnitt „le freak live“ ausgewählte highlights von ihrem letzten (reunion-) gig (tokyo / budokan 1996), bei dem sie zudem von ex-guns n’ roses gitarrist slash, der vocalgruppe sister sledge sowie stevie winwood (auf der hendrix-coverversion „stone free“) unterstützt wurden. zugleich dokumentiert diese veröffentlichung tragischerweise den letzten auftritt von bernard edwards, der nur kurz danach in tokyo verstarb.

erstmals vollständig auf vinyl: das legendäre debütalbum der australisch-britischen d&b-formation pendulum, die damit 2005 aus dem stand in die szene einschlugen. mit sämtlichen 14 tracks der original-cd plus dem bonustrack “blood sugar” (einem späteren 12” track aus 2007). limitierte triple-lp-auflage auf 180g heavyweight vinyl!

2016 fand in santiago de cuba das manana festival statt. es führte zu einem intensiven dialog zwischen vertretern regional-karibischer musiktraditionen und internationalen independent-künstlern aus dem spannungsfeld von dance, avantgarde und jazz. mit der gründung des labels manana wurden vor ort geknüpfte fäden aufgenommen und weitergesponnen. daraus resultierten bereits zwei außergewöhnliche tonträger. -soundspecies & ache meyi- ist der dritte dieser reihe, er fusioniert auf aufsehenerregende weise folk aus kuba mit britischer elektronik. hinter soundspecies verbergen sich zwei als djs und produzenten aktive brüder aus dem englischen dorset. in ihrer musik loten sie die verbindungen zwischen den klängen und formen elektronischer tanzmusik einerseits und den repetitiven mustern von traditionellem folk andererseits aus. die formation ache meyi hat sich hingegen afro-haitianischen rhythmen und stilen wie bembe, vodu, gaga und merengue verschrieben. und das auf eine ziemlich dynamische weise, was angesichts des bandnamens wenig überrascht. die yoruba-begriffe -ache- und -meyi- bedeuten so viel doppelte power.

zum 20. jubiläum präsentiert das nachtdigital festival sein erstes doppelvinyl: nach sechs split-eps und mini-compilations in den vergangenen jahren macht das zum festival gehörende label nun den nächsten schritt. -nachti xx- versammelt beiträge von kollaborativen projekten die auch teil des festivalprogramms sind. die erste platte bestreiten giegling und klm (ein speziell für diesen anlass zusammengestellte formation aus kassem mosse, lowtec und mix mup), die jeweils eine ganze seite bespielen. vinyl nummer zwei vereint pandt und cologne tape mit einem beitrag aus der crew des festivals. das ganze kommt in einem von hausgrafiker manuel birnbacher gestalteten gatefold-cover, ist wie immer streng limitiert und wird ausschließlich auf vinyl veröffentlicht.
